Rockwater Secret Cove Resort (Halfmoon Bay, BC)

SunriseAs you can probably tell from our blog, we love to travel. But despite our desire to search out new hidden gems, we are fully aware of how lucky we are to live in a place as beautiful as British Columbia. As a result, we always make a point to explore our own backyard just as often as we do someone else’s. And while we don’t take our proximity to this beauty for granted, we are often happily reminded of it when we get a chance to visit places like Rockwater Secret Cove Resort.

BoardwalkTucked into Halfmoon Bay on the Sunshine Coast, Rockwater provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city and is only a 35 minute ferry ride from the mainland combined with a 45 minute drive. Incredibly easy access to a place that will make you feel as far removed as if you had travelled for days to get there.

Tenthouse suiteThe Resort itself sits oceanside surrounded by indigenous forest and is made up of a main building housing Ocean View rooms and Poolside Suites, as well as Ocean Front Cabins and several luxurious Tenthouse Suites. Not only were we lucky enough to stay in one of the Tenthouses, we were in the one (#60) furthest out along the Treetop Boardwalk offering completely unobstructed and seemingly endless views of the Pacific Ocean and outlying islands.

arbutusAs we walked past the Zen garden along the boardwalk in early December, the sights and smells were pure West coast winter with arbutus trees stretching out from lichen-covered rocks and a strong fragrance of fresh post-rain in the air.

Inside tenthouse suiteEach Tenthouse is separated off the main boardwalk with its own pathway providing a suitable amount of privacy for each dwelling. They are innovatively designed to maximize space and comfort featuring everything from a gas fireplace and heated floors to a soaker tub, king bed, and private balcony. This is the very definition of “glamping” but be warned, you’ll likely be ruined forever from real camping!

dining roomThe main building is also home to the dining room and lounge which overlook the swimming pool and deck (along with the customary ocean view). The cuisine choices are typically west coast and the wine selections are largely from B.C. We chose to bring our own wine for a reasonable corkage fee.

Although the swimming pool and kayak rentals are only available during the spring and summer months, access to hiking, golf and horseback riding is year round and can be arranged through the resort. But as much as we can only imagine how beautiful Rockwater would be during the summer, we relished the peace and serenity of being in our Tenthouse with the fireplace on, glass of wine in hand and not a soul in sight. Regardless of the time you choose to visit, be sure to experience for yourself the BC coast at its finest.
