Comstock Wines in Healdsburg, California recently reached out and invited us to come and stay at their Residence. One look at the pictures and we jumped at the chance!
The Residence at Comstock Wines is a spectacular four bedroom estate home nestled among the vine rows adjacent to the Comstock Winery. The Residence is a massive, towering structure that provides its guests with luxury living at its finest. The structure evokes a modern barn and fits in well with the surroundings of this beautiful agricultural area.
As you enter the Residence you are immediately struck by a feature wall in the front entrance. Rising about 15 feet and made from old wine barrel staves, it has about a dozen built-in enclaves, each holding a specially made Murano glass bottle from Italy. The bottles are adorned with the symbols of the various elements that go into and are a part of the ground surrounding the Residence that grows the grapes for Comstock’s wines. Written on the wall is the Italian phrase “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici che la bellezza infiora” which means “Drink from a Joyful Cup of Life”. It is a wonderful way to enter a building that sets the stage for the perfect wine country vacation.
We come around the feature wall and enter the Great Room. This is a huge open area that has a fully equipped, ultra-modern kitchen with all of the latest and highest quality appliances. There is cupboard space galore, and each is filled with glasses, plates, cutlery and cooking utensils. Nothing has been forgotten! The kitchen is separated from the dining area by a huge counter with stools, perfect for breakfast or to chat with whoever might be cooking.
The ceiling in the Great Room looks to be 25 – 30 feet high. It is clad in barn board and dotted with plenty of pot lights. The visible wooden trusses add to the homey ambiance. A beautiful dining room table that will comfortably seat 10 is just beyond the kitchen counter. Comfortable high-back chairs surround the blonde wood table. This is a spectacular place to have dinner. We had made reservations at a beautiful restaurant in neighbouring Napa Valley for our first night. When we saw how beautiful the Residence was, we cancelled our reservation and went to the local market and bought food to cook at home. I am sure we were not the first to have done that…
Beyond the dining room is the living area. Two huge couches surround coffee tables. Another 6 chairs allow for seating room for at least 14 guests. All of the furniture is of obvious high quality and chosen with exquisite taste. A complete sound system is provided with an iPad that has streaming radio stations of all sorts of different genres. On one wall a fireplace and chimney made of deep brown concrete squares climbs to the ceiling with dramatic effect. On the opposite wall are paintings and objets d’arts that warm the concrete walls. At the end of the living area are glass doors and windows that look out onto the vineyard. The room size creates a sense of drama, the furnishings and art balance the drama with elegance. The overall feel of the Great Room is one of sophistication and great luxury.
On the perimeter of the Great Room are the four bedrooms. Each has a fireplace and a comfortable sitting area and a desk and chair. There are three king size beds and one room has two queen size beds. Ensuite bathrooms accompany each and are spacious and well-appointed. There is a huge walk-in glass shower, a deep soaker tub and a long counter with two sinks. Soaps, shampoo and conditioners are provided by Molton Brown. Robes and flip flops are also provided. Plenty of thick plush towels are at your disposal.
The bedding is gorgeous and the mattresses have that firm but forgiving comfort that makes for a great night’s sleep. Each bedroom has its own coffee and tea maker, all stocked and ready to go. Bedroom doors can be locked and each bedroom has a door leading out to the covered porch that wraps around the entire building. Outside your bedroom door are two Adirondack chairs with a table. Perfect for having early morning coffee and watching the mists play among the vine rows.
At the front of the Residence, stairs from the entry hall lead up to a loft that is a media room, complete with sound system, wet bar and large screen TV. Finally, behind the kitchen is a second commercial kitchen, ideal if you want to hire a local chef to cook for you and 40 of your closest friends.
The people at Comstock simply cannot do enough for you when you are their guest. Start with a complimentary tasting at their tasting room in the winery a few hundred feet from the Residence. They do a number of excellent white and red wines, but definitely ask to taste their limited release Zinfandel made from 116 year old vines! They can arrange all sorts of activities from catered dinners to bike tours, wine tours, dinner reservations, arranging transportation, etc.
The Residence at Comstock Wines is a spectacular adult getaway in the heart of Sonoma County wine country. (The Residence, being a part of a winery, cannot accommodate children or pets. Maximum 8 persons and 4 cars, but could easily entertain 40 or more people at a function.) The Residence rents for $2800 per night, $2200 for wine club members. It offers unsurpassed luxury, comfort and every detail is carefully thought out. It is a 10 minute drive from the town of Healdsburg, which will charm you with its many galleries, restaurants and tasting rooms. The Residence at Comstock Wine is perfect for several couples wanting to do a wine country vacation or it would be ideal for a corporate retreat. We will definitely be returning!
