Gran Reserva 9041995 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904

At age 21 this wine is in great shape. Beautiful nose of strawberry, sweet tobacco and saddle leather with a slight floral component developing with air. Medium body, this has the silky mouthfeel of a Grand Cru Burgundy. The finish is long and juicy with a slight citrus note. Very complex with lots of earth, mineral and tobacco notes supporting the red fruit of cranberry, raspberry and cherry. Intensely flavoured, this is absolutely delicious.

Medium garnet, fading slightly at the rim. A medium bodied wine with a very expressive nose of cherries & strawberries with notes of spice & vanilla in the background. A wonderfully delicate mouthfeel that delivers strawberries & raspberries in an almost candied tone. With time, the candy tones are replaced by more earthy notes. Classically Rioja, its elegant frame delivers its complex nuances. Fully mature but showing no signs of fading. Delicious!

Fruit driven nose of strawberry with herbal accents and a touch of vanilla. Palate is medium body with ripe tannins gently showing through. Quite smooth with slight stemmy notes, this finds the mid-point between traditional Rioja and the modern style. Quite complex. Terrific value. Drink now as it seems to be at its peak.

A glass of champagne to kick off a new AdVINEture…

In a ‘Wine High Club’ series first, we’re featuring an airline for the 3rd time. We boarded Lufthansa for a much anticipated AdVINEture to Italy and Croatia with lofty expectations given our previous experience. With the amount of time and effort that is put into the airline’s wine selections each year, it should come as no surprise that we were duly impressed not only by the current wines being served, but also by the fact that we have yet to come across a duplicate wine selection given our frequency flying with this airline.
